A dark bronze bell without a clapper hanging from a slender wrought iron stand, a soft pool of light spilling down the wall behind it.

No. V · Permanent collection

The Bell That Rings Silence

Material
Impossible
Provenance
Deaccessioned by a monastery that had grown too quiet.
Condition
Certain of itself

One toll, and the room forgets its noise.

Cast without a clapper, the bell rings anyway: struck, it subtracts. One toll and the room sheds its hum, its footsteps, its whispered commentary, leaving a silence so complete that visitors describe hearing their own heartbeat apologise. The monastery that commissioned it used it to end arguments. We ring it every evening at closing time. If you have stood in this hall after dark, you already know the sound it does not make.
